How Union (2019) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.
The ending of The Union reveals a complex web of betrayal and deception. Roxanne’s husband, Nick Faraday, who was presumed dead after the attack in Trieste, is unexpectedly revealed to be the true mastermind behind the series of attacks on the Union and the theft of the sensitive database. Faraday, frustrated with his pay and personal life, had secretly turned rogue and allied himself with a dangerous criminal, Juliet Quinn, who was also involved in the stolen auction. His plan was to sell the stolen database of agents to the highest bidder, making billions in the process. Roxanne, once convinced that her husband was dead and loyal to the Union, is devastated by this revelation, especially since she had trusted him and believed he was on her side.
As the climax unfolds, Roxanne and Mike chase Faraday to the Istrian peninsula, where he plans to escape with the database. In a tense confrontation, Roxanne is forced to shoot her husband just as he tries to flee on a boat, ensuring the data does not fall into the wrong hands. Her decision to kill Faraday is a tragic but necessary act to protect national security. Afterward, Roxanne and Mike secure the database, which is handed over to the CIA, successfully preventing a major catastrophe. The film ends with the two of them starting a new chapter together, not just romantically but professionally, as Brennan offers them a new mission in Marrakesh, suggesting that their partnership in espionage is just beginning. In the end, the film leaves us with the image of two agents who have overcome betrayal and personal loss to secure their future, highlighting themes of trust, sacrifice, and loyalty.
