When Gerry Fenn finally reaches the church archives, he discovers the truth behind the “miracle” that has taken over Banfield: the voice speaking through Alice is not the Virgin Mary at all, but the vengeful spirit of Mary Elnor, a woman burned as a witch in 1945. Mary had sold her soul to darkness, and the only way she could wield miracles was through her bloodline—Alice, a deaf‑mute girl who suddenly regains her voice after the Kern doll is broken, is that last descendant.
Armed with this knowledge, Gerry rushes into the crowded revival where townsfolk are about to witness another miracle. He shatters the illusion by announcing that everything they have seen is a fabrication, a lie he invented to get a story. To the crowd’s shock, Alice echoes his confession, her own mind breaking free from Mary’s control. The sudden surge of doubt forces the malevolent spirit to manifest, tearing itself out of Alice’s body.

Mary Elnor, now unshackled, lunges for Gerry, but Alice throws herself in front of him. In the violent struggle she is killed, and because the curse binds Mary’s existence to the life of her final heir, Mary is consumed by fire and disappears as soon as Alice dies.
Grief-stricken, Gerry cradles Alice’s lifeless body and pleads for justice, begging the heavens to right the wrong. In a final, desperate act of faith, his prayer is answered: Alice’s eyes flutter open, and she rises from death, restored by the very miracle she once seemed to channel. The film ends with her alive again, while the town’s false faith is left in ruins and Gerry is left to reckon with the cost of his own obsession.
