Adapted from Alfred Jarry’s 1896 play, it follows greedy, overweight Pere Ubu as he schemes to depose the reigning monarch and seize the throne of Poland. His ruthless rise includes betraying allies, imposing crushing taxes on the populace, and ultimately committing mass slaughter. By his side is his equally coarse but oddly more sympathetic wife, Mère Ubu, a foul‑mouthed figure reminiscent of Lady Macbeth.
