The film unfolds during the Viking raids of the ninth century, around 860 AD, tracing the arc of a Norwegian raid that begins with bold, nearly reckless momentum. A band of Viking warriors travels under the command of Thorir, Tor Stokke, and his companion Einar as they strike a Slavic village. The village is left barren of men who have fallen in battle with Danish invaders, its few rewards reduced to slim pickings and a lone moose hunted by Kuksha, a young Slavic boy. In a moment of audacious courage, Kuksha Aleksandr Timoshkin steps forward to challenge the intruders and even goes up against the fearsome berserker Sigurd, who quickly writes him off as a mere thrall. Yet Thorir can see something more in the boy’s grit, and he decides to take Kuksha captive, sparking a potentially unlikely bond that will shape the journey ahead.

On the march back toward Norway, the expedition is ambushed by Danish forces led by rival kings Atli and Atsur. The clash is brutal, but Kuksha’s quick thinking turns the tide: he improvises a dangerous maneuver that sets one of the enemy ships ablaze, tilting the battle in favor of the Norse. The fight costs a life as Einar falls in combat, leaving Thorir to confront a heavy grief. In the wake of loss, Thorir chooses to adopt Kuksha, giving him a new name—Einar the Lucky—to honor the fallen nephew and to crown the young warrior’s future with a sense of fate and fortune.

The Norsemen winter in a settlement ruled by King Olav, where politics, longing, and rival loyalties begin to test their cohesion. Olav’s daughter, Signe, becomes entangled in a quiet but powerful romance with Kuksha, a blossoming love that complicates the already tense dynamics of the camp. Signe’s future is further complicated by Tyra, her mother, who wants a different match for her daughter and lobbies for the wily and fortunate Kuksha as a partner. The scheming intensifies as Tyra and Harald—Signe’s brother—plot against Sigurd, resorting to poison and ambush in an attempt to push Kuksha aside. Yet Kuksha’s steadfast sense of honor keeps him rooted in the fray, even as the intramural conflict threatens to break the community apart.

Tensions erupt when Sigurd ends up killing one of his attackers in self-defense, forcing the group to flee the settlement. Harald tries to seize Kuksha, but Signe, with the aid of a Byzantine scholar named Levius, helps the young warrior escape. The pursuit turns grim when Harald murders Levius, and Signe, torn between love and loyalty, parts from Kuksha with a tearful farewell.

Deep in the forest, Signe confronts Sigurd and confesses her love for Kuksha, provoking a charged confrontation that ends in tragedy when Signe throws herself onto Sigurd’s blade and dies. Grief and vengeance knot the air as Sigurd is found by Harald and his men, setting the stage for further bloodshed and reprisals. Meanwhile, Thorir and Kuksha sail east toward Gardarike, a region in the lands of the east, where Thorir hopes to abandon raiding and pursue trade. Kuksha, however, clings to a personal vow: to reclaim his freedom and identity and eventually return to his homeland, even as the era’s chaos swirls around him and the war-long shadow of the raids continues to loom.
