Set 300 years before the events of the first film, the story unfolds in the then-present-day year 2009, as the government becomes aware something unusual is unfolding. A woman drives erratically on a California highway, arguing over her cell phone. Police officer Ryan Hadley, Bruce Boxleitner, pulls her over and issues a warning. The man on the other end calls back; she snaps and tosses the phone aside, and the device transmorphs into a robotic spider that attacks and kills her.
At Edwards Air Force Base, an NSA officer informs his superiors that a signal has been intercepted. In Los Angeles, Dr. Jo Summers, Jennifer Rubin, is stunned to read in the newspaper about the driver’s death. In the Kern County Morgue, investigators are baffled by the strange wound that killed the driver. Back at home, Madison Ryan, Alana DiMaria, returns to a house where her television has suddenly failed.
Jake, Shane van Dyke, the afformentioned narrator and an old friend of Madison, arrives to fix the TV and quickly uncovers a startling truth when his inspection of the satellite dish reveals it transmorphs into a robot. He warns Madison, but when he steps outside again, the robot is gone. Summers then teams up with Hadley to pursue the driver’s death, but the NSA intervenes and asks Summers to come along. She urges Hadley to locate the missing phone carried by the initial victim.
Meanwhile, a driver in an SUV experiences a five-second warning from his GPS to exit the vehicle, before the device fires a laser into his forehead. Ryan gathers Madison and Jake and the trio presses on to recover the phone. He intercepts the first driver’s cellular phone from the coroner’s office, and as they close in, the SUV attempts to ram them. The chase intensifies as the satellite-driven machines assault their vehicle, and the SUV itself transmorphs into a robot.
The machines soon seize control of the Earth. A small group of survivors learns that the aliens are altering the water and the atmosphere to fit their physiology. A soldier claims this information came from Russia, where a captured machine has yielded crucial details. They salvage explosives and destroy one of the terraforming devices, but the act triggers a harmful release of toxic chemicals into the atmosphere, to which the machines have adapted. In the aftermath, Jake broadcasts a beacon to other surviving humans who have taken refuge underground, directing them to join him.
