Three Thousand Years of Longing

Alithea's reluctance stems from her childhood experience with an imaginary friend she created in her diary. She built an entire life story around him but abandoned him out of fear of being overwhelmed by her own imagination. This traumatic experience taught her that making wishes and giving in to fantasies leads to regret, making her skeptical of the Djinn's offer.

King Solomon imprisoned the Djinn because the Djinn was both kin and beloved to the Queen of Sheba. Solomon's jealousy over this relationship led him to trap the Djinn in a brass bottle, which was then cast into the Red Sea by a bird, beginning the Djinn's centuries of imprisonment.

Gülten wished for the affection of Suleiman's son Mustafa, but her desire was manipulated by the cunning Hürrem Sultan. Her wish led to betrayal and death, leaving her unfulfilled before she could make her final wish. The Djinn witnessed her tragic end while invisible in the palace.

Gülten died before she could make her final wish. Her desire for Mustafa's love was exploited by Hürrem Sultan, leading to her execution. Since she died with an unfulfilled wish, the Djinn remained trapped, unable to complete the three-wish cycle.

Unlike previous wishers, Zefir sought wisdom and understanding rather than love or power. Her wishes deepened her genuine bond with the Djinn. However, her desire for independence led her to wish for oblivion, which the Djinn was forced to grant, returning him to his bottle.

The Djinn explains that modern cities are toxic to his existence. The constant interference from city technology, electrical signals, phones, WiFi, weakens and debilitating him. This forces Alithea to confront the reality that they cannot live together in the modern world.

After hearing the Djinn's three historical tales, Alithea develops genuine affection for him. Her first wish asks him to love her as he once loved Zefir, demonstrating that she wants an authentic emotional connection rather than a transactional relationship based on wishes.

Alithea realizes that the modern world is killing the Djinn and that their relationship cannot survive in her environment. Her final wish to release him comes from deep love and selflessness, she chooses his survival over being together, understanding he cannot thrive amongst humans.

The Djinn returns because being freed by a genuine wish, made out of love rather than selfishness, breaks the cycle of imprisonment. After being released, he can exist in the human world without the bottle's constraints. He visits Alithea in the park, and she narrates he will always return throughout her lifetime.

Alithea's imaginary friend represents her early experience with storytelling and the power of imagination. Creating a whole life story for him, then abandoning him out of fear, shaped her belief that wishes lead to regret. This backstory explains her initial skepticism and ultimately connects to her writing the Djinn's stories.

The Djinn shares his three historical tales to prove the cautionary nature of wishes and to explain how he became imprisoned through centuries. Each tale, from Queen of Sheba through Gülten to Zefir, demonstrates different ways wishes can go wrong, while also revealing his capacity for deep love.

Alithea's second wish to uncover the Djinn's voice reflects her desperate attempt to save him in the modern world. By giving him the ability to speak, she hopes to deepen their connection and find a way to help him survive. It represents her regret about their limited time together and her need for true communication.
