The conclusion of The Tutor delivers a shocking reversal that recontextualizes the entire film, revealing that the supposed victim, Ethan, is actually the true villain of the story. Throughout the movie, Ethan appears to be a dedicated educator being tormented by Jackson, a wealthy and obsessive student. However, the final act discloses that Jackson’s erratic behavior was a calculated ruse designed to entrap Ethan. It turns out that Ethan had an affair with Jackson’s mother, Rachel, years prior. When she refused to leave her husband for him—compounded by the stress of a pregnancy that Ethan viewed as a threat to his freedom—he murdered her in a fit of jealous rage and successfully covered it up.

Jackson’s entire existence during the film is revealed to be an elaborate fabrication intended to avenge his mother. The teenager did not attend the school he claimed to; the mansion where he lived was borrowed, and the man posing as his father was a hired actor. By infiltrating Ethan's life and destroying his career and reputation through staged evidence and manipulation, Jackson forced Ethan into a corner where he finally confessed to the murder. The plan, however, has devastating consequences. After admitting his guilt, Ethan murders his own cousin, Gavin, who was helping Jackson, and attempts to kill Jackson and his girlfriend, Annie, to eliminate any witnesses. He is stopped only because Annie, suspicious of Ethan’s recent infidelity, had installed a tracking app on his phone, allowing her to intervene.

The film ends on a bleak note that denies the audience a sense of closure. Although Jackson achieves his goal of extracting a confession and uncovering the truth about his mother’s death, he fails to bring Ethan to legal justice. Ethan escapes the final confrontation and is last seen interviewing for a new tutoring position, implying that his sociopathic tendencies remain a threat to others. This ending subverts the typical class dynamics of the psychological thriller genre; the wealthy teenager is revealed to be the hero seeking justice, while the working-class protagonist is exposed as a manipulative killer who slips away to start a new cycle of deception.
