Ending explained
How The Spellbound (2019) ends, in short: the final scene, the last twist and what it means for the characters. The full ending explained, with every spoiler, lives on its own page.
The animated fantasy Spellbound concludes with a poignant subversion of the traditional "happily ever after," where the curse on King Solon and Queen Ellesmere is broken not by magic, but by emotional acceptance. Throughout the film, Princess Ellian believes that saving her parents means restoring them to the people they were before they turned into monsters. However, upon reaching the Lake of Light, the royal couple realizes they cannot simply wash away their monstrous forms because their behavior predated the curse. They had already become monsters through their constant bickering and loss of love, long before the spell physically transformed them. The lake offers no cure for a love that no longer exists, forcing them to accept that they cannot return to the past.
The true breaking of the curse occurs when the parents stop focusing on their own conflict and instead turn their attention to their daughter. As Ellian begins to transform into a monster herself—overwhelmed by the pressure of keeping the family together—her parents finally realize the toll their failed relationship has taken on her. In a moment of selfless clarity, they pour the remaining light of the lake onto her, prioritizing her well-being over their own desire to be "fixed." This act creates a brand new light, signifying that while their romantic love has faded, their unity as parents remains strong enough to heal the family. Ellian complements this by accepting that she must let go of the past; she embraces a vision of her younger self, acknowledging that families do not grow in a straight line and that things will never be exactly as they were.
The film's resolution offers a refreshing and mature conclusion where the King and Queen do not reconcile romantically. Instead, they choose to live in separate castles while continuing to rule and parent together. This arrangement is presented not as a tragedy, but as a healthy evolution of their family dynamic, allowing Ellian and the kingdom to thrive. Ultimately, the ending delivers a touching message about divorce, reassuring the audience that a family's structure may change, but the love within it can grow into something new and equally beautiful.
