The Reward

The story takes place in the U.S.-Mexico border region near El Paso, Texas. The action unfolds in a dusty desert town with a tense, law-and-order atmosphere, and the pursuit crosses national lines between the United States and Mexico.

Played by Max von Sydow, Scott Swenson is a crash-landed crop duster who becomes an opportunistic player in the cross-border chase. He negotiates with Captain Carbajal to help track Bryant in exchange for a share of the reward, navigating a fine line between self-preservation and cooperation with local authorities.

Captain Carbajal is the local law enforcement captain who coordinates the effort to capture Bryant. He leads the posse and becomes debilitated by malaria during the pursuit, which underscores the toll the mission takes on those enforcing the law in the harsh border environment.

Joaquin is a posse member who ultimately chooses to aid Bryant and Sylvia in their escape, illustrating fluctuating loyalty under threat.
