Jonathan Miller’s ENO production of The Mikado places the operetta in a 1920s British seaside resort. A chorus of Japanese gentlemen appears as cartoonish British peers, stressing the English satire. Quirky moments—Ascot‑dressed gentry singing in Japanese—add fun, while the crisp black‑and‑white design frames Gilbert and Sullivan’s fantasy Japan.
