Jane Hawkins was once an Olympic gymnast whose career was cut short by a devastating injury. Now in her forties, she endures a loveless, childless marriage to her husband, David, and earns a living as a massage therapist, while maintaining peak fitness through a strict routine.

A chance reunion with a former gymnastics friend, Denise, nudges Jane toward a new dream: aerial dance. She begins lessons with gymnastics trainer Nicole, and soon encounters Serena, a Korean-American dancer who grew up in a Jewish adoptive family and is closeted about her sexuality. The trio—Serena, Nicole, and Jane—begins to shape a Cirque du Soleil–style aerial act they hope to bring to Las Vegas. When Nicole must withdraw for family reasons, Jane and Serena press on, and their professional collaboration deepens into romance.

Jane finds herself torn between her growing love for Serena and the possibility of reuniting with her husband, who now wants a child. When the husband discovers the attraction between the two women, Jane packs her bags and leaves. The movie ends with Jane driving to Las Vegas, where Serena is.
