A dramatized portrait of Portuguese high society unfolds as a bizarre, operatic film. Commissioned by director Manoel de Oliveira with music by João Paes, it blends 19th‑century romanticism, popular, modernist and post‑modernist styles. A narrator introduces the wedding of Viscount d’Aveleda and Marguerite, but the bridal chamber spirals into surreal perversions, culminating in cannibalism among the guests and family.
