The Bridge

Standartenführer Hoffmann is assigned as extra security for a vital bridge near the Yugoslav border with Greece as German forces are pulling out. He wants to take a proactive approach toward Yugoslav Partisan threats, but Oberst von Felsen is wary and skeptical that such measures will actually prevent trouble during a retreat. The tension between Hoffmann’s insistence on vigilance and von Felsen’s more cautious stance sets the tone for a mission where loyalty, strategy, and timing are everything.

On the partisan side, the plan is simple in purpose but complex in execution: destroy the bridge to halt German reinforcements and foil a looming operation that would see 5,000 troops moving across the line. A Partisan officer nicknamed “Tigar” Tigar is given the daunting seven-day deadline to pull off the sabotage. To pull it off, he assembles a small, disparate team drawn from different strands of the resistance: an assassin nicknamed “Tihi” Tihi known for his stealth, a young fighter called “Bambino” Bambino whose enthusiasm is matched by his skill, and Zavatoni Zavatoni, a Sardinian demolitions expert who serves as Bambino’s mentor and the group’s technical backbone.

Seeking more resources and a path to the explosives, the team heads to Mane, a shady contractor who leads them to the home of the Engineer Inženjer, the man who designed the bridge and thus holds the keys to its vulnerabilities. The Engineer’s knowledge could make or break the mission; but he is cautious and realistic about the danger of what he’s being drawn into, and the rescue from Gestapo is only part of the test—he must be willing to go with them when the time comes. The group’s plans hit a snag at a crucial moment when they reach the rendezvous point for their last recruit and instead run into Jelena Jelena, Jelena, the Engineer’s sister. She reveals that her brother has been captured, and the revelation forces the team to improvise on the spot as a German patrol closes in. The escape ride through the wetlands is tense and dangerous, and the Engineer’s intuition warns him that the Germans will not simply let him go.

In the ensuing chase, Bambino is wounded while trying to outflank their pursuers, and Zavatoni is forced to take drastic action. He sacrifices the moment to eliminate the immediate threat and, with dynamite at hand, kills the remaining German forces. The rescue becomes survival, and the group continues with one more layer of danger added to the already brittle plan. Their path forward grows murkier as they are finally captured by a patrol under the command of a ruthless officer. Just before the firing squad, a dramatic turn occurs when the captors are decisively turned against their own by a reversal that reveals the infiltrator’s true allegiance and the Partisans’ readiness to take control of their own fate.

With Hoffmann and his German units moving closer to their objective, the Partisans improvise by slipping into German uniforms and using a truck to disguise their advance. They stop briefly at Mane’s contact’s home to verify the location of the explosives—and to gauge whether a leak exists that could betray them. Unbeknownst to the group, a mole within their ranks has already passed information to the Germans, and Hoffmann’s forces quickly close the net around them. A single intercepted message from the home signals the enemy’s approach, and the contact is killed that night, underscoring how quickly trust frays in such high-stakes operations.

Despite the setback, Hoffmann is able to secure the explosives cache at a convent nearby ahead of Tiger’s team, but a nun’s warning foreshadows the danger of an ambush and the possibility of betrayal within their ranks. The Partisans press on, determined to root out the mole, and the tension centers especially on Jelena, who becomes a prime suspect in the wake of the intercepted communications. Faust, a German officer acting as a double agent, pretends to cooperate while pursuing his own agenda, but his deceit is exposed. He leads a German pursuit back toward the group, yet his own soldiers are ambushed, and he is captured, exposing the fragility of the supposed alliance.

Tiger makes a crucial decision when the team retreats into the German lines, using stolen uniforms and a transport vehicle to slip past the guards. Their goal is to retrieve the explosives and force Hoffmann to reveal his command structure. The Engineer, torn between self-preservation and duty, ultimately tells Zavatoni where to plant the explosives, a moment that tilts the balance toward action over doubt. Von Felsen remains wary and must depart to rejoin the overall retreat, leaving orders in the hands of senior leadership as the retreat across the bridge becomes a dangerous possibility rather than a certainty.

A sudden, unanswered phone call exposes the plan and brutal consequences follow: Mane is killed, the tension peaks, and Faust dies at the hands of Tiger on the bridge. Zavatoni is killed just before he can trigger the explosion, and the Engineer bolts toward the logistical finale. He reaches the bridge, pursued by Hoffmann, and uses the detonator to unleash the blast, destroying the span just as the German retreat moves to cross. The silence that follows is heavy with loss and the quiet, sorrowful acknowledgment that such a beautiful structure could be reduced to rubble as survivors from both sides reflect on the price of war and the bridge’s demise.
