The Blob

A meteorite crashes near Arborville, California. An elderly vagabond discovers a sphere containing a massive slime mold-like substance that adheres to his hand. The Blob begins to reveal its dangerous nature as contact is made.

Three high school students Paul, Meg, and Brian take the injured man to Arborville Hospital. After Brian leaves, the Blob begins to melt the lower half of the rescued man, who calls for help as the creature grows. Meg returns to find Paul being consumed by the Blob, which fully dissolves him and seeps from the hospital.

Meg and Brian meet at a diner after their unsatisfactory encounters with the police, and Meg explains what she has learned about the Blob. The diner's handyman George is fatally pulled into the sink drain, proving the creature's deadly reach. The Blob pursues them to the diner's walk-in freezer but retreats when it enters.

The Blob slaughters the diner's owner and Sheriff Geller, then retreats back into the sewers. The townspeople realize the danger has moved underground as the creature disappears from view.

Meg and Brian return to the police station and learn Deputy Briggs is near the meteor landing site, while Dr. Meddows leads a military operation ordering quarantine for the town and the teens. The plan sparks fear as Brian tries to escape and Meg is taken to town; Meg also learns that her younger brother Kevin snuck into the movie theater with his friend Eddie.

In the town theater, the Blob kills several staff and audience members. Meg rushes to the rescue, saving Eddie and Kevin as other patrons flee the theater.

Brian learns that the Blob is a Cold War biological warfare experiment that was launched into space and later returned to Earth, feeding on bacteria mutated by space radiation. He evades government personnel by riding his motorcycle into the sewers.

Meg and Kevin flee from the Blob, but Eddie is consumed. Kevin escapes by scaling a pipe to the surface.

Meddows orders the sewers quarantined; Brian uses a surviving agent's grenade launcher to blow open a manhole and publicly confront Meddows.

The military bomb the Blob with grenades and explosives, but the creature only grows more enraged. It bursts from the sewers and begins feasting on the town's population.

Reverend Meeker, scarred by burns, proclaims the end of the world during a tent-meeting in a field. He asks when the day of reckoning will come, then secretly shows a jar containing a still-living piece of the Blob and mutters that the Lord will give him a sign.

Meg uses a fire extinguisher on the Blob, and the creature recoils from the gas. She realizes that the Blob cannot tolerate cold.

Brian retrieves a snowmaking truck equipped with liquid nitrogen canisters and begins assaulting the Blob with cold. He shoots snow at the creature as part of the final defense.

Meg rigs the canisters with an explosive charge taken from a dying soldier; the blast covers the Blob in liquid nitrogen, flash-freezing it. The Blob's crystallized remains are stored elsewhere for safekeeping.

Moss Woodley stores the Blob's crystallized remains in the town icehouse. Later, at a tent-meeting church service in a field, Meeker, disfigured by burns and driven insane, proclaims a doomsday sermon and secretly holds up a glass jar containing a still-living piece of the Blob, saying that the Lord will give him a sign.
