At a remote Alpine way‑station, the bell ringer kills a traveling horse trader with a thrown rock, steals his money and uses it to bribe the simple‑minded daughter of his only friend—himself a head‑injury victim—into marriage, even though she loves a humble woodsman who is being pressured to wed the innkeeper’s daughter.
