The film examines the cultural conflict that arose with the rise of disco music. Emerging from Black and gay club scenes, disco surpassed rock as America’s top genre by the late 1970s. Many rock enthusiasts considered disco’s repetitive sound and emphasis on pleasure to be simplistic and insincere. The backlash against disco revealed deeper cultural divisions, with some interpreting the hostility as rooted in racism and homophobia. This tension culminated in a notorious riot at “Disco Demolition Night” during a baseball game in Chicago.
