Adapted from Lu Xun’s 1921 novella, the film is set amid the 1911 Chinese revolution. Ah Q, a destitute peasant, seeks to escape his grinding poverty—first hoping to improve his status through marriage, then joining the revolutionary movement, believing it offers a path to social uplift. The adaptation presents Ah Q with a more nuanced humanity for viewers unfamiliar with pre‑revolutionary China.
