High school student Lillian embarks on an eye-opening class trip to Washington, D.C., where unexpected events change the course of her journey. Amidst this voyage, fate takes a dark turn when an armed assailant targets a local restaurant, believing it to be a hub for a secret pedophilia ring. This shocking incident leads Lillian into the company of Caleb (Earl Cave), an anarchist activist, who invites her into a world of social dissent and protest.

As Lillian becomes entangled in the group’s activities, she encounters Lawrence (Simon Rex), a university professor with troubling ties to far-right ideologies and neo-Nazi beliefs. Despite his dubious background, he offers her a place to stay, where she unwittingly witnesses a mysterious transaction involving a suspicious duffel bag. With tension mounting, Lillian reassures a friend of her safety, while the media buzzes with news of a police manhunt under the assumption that she may have been kidnapped.

As Lawrence’s initially cordial hospitality turns into a request for a trip to New York City, Lillian finds herself caught in a whirlwind of events. On their Manhattan adventure, she persuades him to book a hotel room, where she takes a bold step, shedding her inhibitions. Seizing the opportunity, she explores the contents of the duffel bag and uncovers a significant stash of cash. This discovery empowers Lillian, who quickly seizes control of her situation by taking the duffel bag and disappearing from Lawrence’s life.

In the vibrant streets of Manhattan, Lillian crosses paths with Molly (Ayo Edebiri) and Matthew (Jeremy O. Harris), who are intrigued by her unique story and offer her a role in their upcoming film. During the shooting, she develops a close bond with her co-star Ian (Jacob Elordi), whose real-life charm and talent transform their on-screen chemistry into a captivating romance that captures the attention of paparazzi.

However, the tranquil moment is shattered when a figure linked to the duffel bag transaction shows up on set, igniting chaos and violence that results in tragic losses, including Ian’s life. The fallout leads Lillian into a desperate scramble for safety. Just when things look dire, assistance emerges from Mo, a resourceful crew member who takes her to a hidden barn on land owned by his brother Ahmad. This sanctuary, a refuge for an isolated Islamic community, initially offers Lillian safety, but she remains on edge, fearing the possibility of pursuit.

After some time, she learns from a newspaper that the skinheads behind her trauma have been captured by the police. Yet, as she longs for freedom, her plans to leave are thwarted when Ahmad and others see through her ruse of searching for a lost dog, and her fatigue catches up with her, leading to a fall.

Unexpectedly, she awakens in the comforting atmosphere of a monastery, where a kind priest informs her that her rescue from near hypothermia has gotten the attention of the authorities. Upon returning home, Lillian faces the reality of her classmate’s lives, now overshadowed by a recent tragic terrorist attack reported across the news. However, amidst this chaotic world, Lillian quietly steps outside her house with a small smile, looking directly into the camera, symbolizing her resilience and newfound perspective on life.
