In the south of England, a secluded laboratory near a quiet village becomes the stage for the bold, perilous work of physicist Dr. Laird Alec Mango and his American ally Gilbert Graham Forrest Tucker. They push magnetic fields to the limit, drawing power from equipment not designed to handle such loads, and an accident injures a junior assistant, prompting a replacement that brings Brigadier Cartwright Wyndham Goldie to the scene. He is joined by Michele Dupont Gaby André, a sharp computer expert whose analysis helps steady the power problem while hinting at dangers far beyond the lab’s walls.

Cartwright’s assessment grows grimmer when an interrupted experiment morphs stray steel into powder, convincing the Deputy Defence Minister Gerald Wilson Geoffrey Chater to treat the project as a top priority. He dispatches a full security team led by counter-espionage officer Jimmy Murray Hugh Latimer. Yet the deeper threat isn’t only human: the hyper-magnetic field destabilizes the ionosphere, spawns abnormal weather miles away, imperils ships at sea, and weakens Earth’s protective shield against cosmic rays.

A mysterious visitor named “Mr. Smith” arrives, articulate and oddly detached from everyday life, yet possessing extensive knowledge of magnetic science and urging caution about the experiments. Although Murray suspects he is a spy, Graham and Dupont begin to sense a measure of restraint in the visitor’s warnings as the danger intensifies. The surrounding forest teems with colossal insects and other mutations, while Dr. Laird presses on, determined to continue his risky work even as the world outside grows unsettled.

When the army finally arrives, Michele is threatened by the encroaching monsters and nearly ensnared by a spider’s web, but the troops intervene just in time to save her. Mr. Smith reveals his true nature: he is an alien emissary from Planet X, come to warn that Earth’s orbit could be destabilized if Laird’s experiments persist. The others rally to stop the escalating threat, while the enigmatic visitor becomes a reluctant ally in the fight to avert catastrophe.

With the crisis escalating, Mr. Smith summons his flying saucer, positioning it above the laboratory to unleash a final, devastating strike. The building is obliterated, and the immediate danger is averted. In the aftermath, the alien bids farewell to Graham and Dupont before boarding his craft, which rises into the night sky as a pale oval of light, leaving the village to ponder the fragile balance between scientific curiosity and cosmic consequences.

Mr. Smith Martin Benson speaks to the need for restraint and teams up with the survivors to halt Dr. Laird’s project, while the team around Laird remains focused on safeguarding humanity from a threat that could reach beyond their world.
