The dull, routine life at the small American Navy weather station on Gow Island in the South Pacific is upended when a C-47 refueling mission arrives with scientists, an Air Force flight crew, and a cargo of Antarctic specimens. As the plane nears the island, something within the cargo shifts, a crewman screams, and he plunges to his death. Back at the base, the transport’s radio crackles with screams and gunfire, and the aircraft suddenly swerves, crashes on Gow Island, and crushes the control tower and the island’s only two‑way radio, leaving the runway blocked and the communications severed. Lieutenant Charles Brown [Anthony Eisley] leads the response, coordinating a small rescue party from the weather station with Navy nurse Nora Hall [Mamie Van Doren] and biologist Dr. Arthur Beecham [Walter Sande].

What they find at the wreck is unsettling: most of the scientists and crew are missing, and only a traumatized pilot remains, unable to speak. The cargo, however, has survived in an unexpected form—penguins and several prehistoric trees taken from the frozen tundra. As unloading begins, Dr. Beecham suggests an unlikely plan to save the trees by planting them in the island’s soil, hoping their ancient genetics will adapt to the tropical environment. The promise of a scientific breakthrough dimly flickers, even as a tropical storm sweeps over Gow Island and shakes the already fragile routine of the weather station.

Soon, the island’s bird life grows unsettled, and a troubling corrosive residue begins to appear in various locations. The team starts to see a disturbing pattern: the planted prehistoric trees have begun to grow rapidly, birthing acid‑secreting, carnivorous monsters that roam Gow Island at night. These night prowlers move with eerie patience, hunting the island’s flora and fauna, then closing in on the base’s personnel. Brown must hold together a shrinking circle of Navy staff and a fragile coalition of scientists and civilians while trying to understand how to stop this prehistoric menace. The weapons at their disposal prove largely ineffective against the sap‑dripping, tree‑grown behemoths, and the situation grows increasingly perilous.

A turning point comes when civilian meteorologist [Edward Faulkner] as Bob Spaulding takes decisive action, using Molotov cocktails to unleash fire—the one force capable of burning the creatures to ashes. Fire becomes the island’s only reliable weapon against the nocturnal invaders, and the team works to leverage any chance to keep the monsters at bay long enough to call for help. As communications are finally reestablished, the mainland responds with a series of air strikes: multiple aircraft are sent in to deliver napalm and fire‑based missiles at the slow‑moving threats, turning the night into a blaze of destruction.

With the danger gradually burning away, Gow Island’s surviving personnel begin to reclaim control of the situation. The strikes restore hope and, in the process, pave the way for a fragile romance to blossom between Brown and Nora Hall, who have grown closer amid the crisis and the shared goal of preserving life on the island. The combined force of science, fire, and disciplined military response gradually eliminates the threat, leaving Brown, Nora, and the others to survey the wrecked landscape and contemplate what comes next.

Throughout the ordeal, the crew’s resilience is tested as they navigate the moral weight of using fire to combat an unknown prehistoric threat and the emotional toll of isolation on a remote speck of land. The story climbs from a routine weather station routine to a high‑stakes struggle for survival, hinging on the unlikely alliance between military personnel, scientists, and civilians. In the end, Gow Island’s danger recedes, but the experience lingers as a stark reminder of how quickly a quiet outpost can become the front line of an otherworldly threat, and how human resolve can turn catastrophe into a chance for redemption and connection. Biff Elliot anchors the leadership dynamic as Cmdr. Arthur Simpson, while Bobby Van appears as Ens. Rutherford Chandler, adding depth to the base’s human network as the situation escalates and then resolves.
