Read the full ending explained

The film reveals that the true antagonist behind the horrors in Roquenoir isn't a supernatural creature but a human one: Doctor Carole. She is the so-called "soul eater," a deranged individual and part of a sick network that abducts children, abusing and filming them in horrific acts. Evan and Jeanne, two children obsessed with the myth of the soul eater, believe that killing certain people—specifically parents and those involved—will somehow destroy this evil. Their twisted belief leads them to orchestrate violence, killing their own parents and others involved in the abuse, in a misguided attempt to save themselves and others from the supposed evil. The plane crash earlier in the story is tied to their scheme; it was carrying a rare, dangerous drug that Evan and Jeanne found and believed could help eradicate the soul eater. They experimented with this drug, which turned out to be highly toxic and mind-altering, and used it on their parents before their ultimate act—killing them.

As the story unravels, it becomes clear that the murders, the disappearances, and the strange behaviors are all linked to the influence of this drug and the twisted mythology around the soul eater. Franck, who initially appears to be a local police officer, is actually a man driven by a personal mission—his own missing daughter, which motivates his relentless investigation. The film's major twist is that Franck is not a legitimate cop; he’s an outsider with his own vendetta.

In the climax, it is revealed that Carole, the presumed scientist and therapist, was the mastermind behind the abductions and the abuse. She was creating a horrifying cycle where she and her made-up mythology of the soul eater justified their atrocities. The other characters involved—Yanik, Henri, and Gonnet—are shown to be complicit in or victims of this terrible system, either mentally possessed or coerced into participation.

The film concludes with Evan and Jeanne having succeeded in their misguided quest to kill the "soul eater" by using the drug, leading to a series of tragic consequences including the deaths of the abusive adults. Elisabeth, who has uncovered the terrible truth, recognizes the need for proper psychological care for the children, both to recover from their trauma and to prevent further tragedies. The story underscores the catastrophic impact human cruelty can have when rooted in delusion and depravity, with no supernatural entity ending up being responsible—only the human monsters behind the horrifying acts. The film ends on a note of cautious hope, as Elisabeth vows to protect and help the children, knowing that evil was born from human depravity, not supernatural forces.
