Ending Explained
Christmas Eve is approaching, and it's Julian's eleventh birthday. Typically, this is the best day of the year, filled with the aroma of gingersnaps and tangerines, a crackling fire, a decorated Christmas tree, and flickering candlelight. However, this year, things are different.

In the end, Julian discovers that Hedvig is actually a ghost, lingering because she is unable to let go of her life. Hedvig died as a young girl in a tragic accident, drowning in the ice while skating, and Hendrick, her brother, blamed himself for her death. He had abandoned the house and created art in her memory, believing that she was still angry or upset. Julian’s belief and his love for Hedvig enabled her to appear one last time, and she was able to understand that she didn’t need to stay trapped as a spirit anymore. The realization that she would be remembered through Julian's art and family’s love gave her the strength to move on. Hedvig's crossing over to the afterlife signifies her peace and release from her burden of holding onto life out of fear of being forgotten. Julian’s heartfelt wish for her to think of him whenever it snowed was fulfilled when, in the end, Juni came to take Hedvig’s spirit away, symbolizing that she was finally at peace and reunited with her family in the afterlife. This ending reinforces the message that love and remembrance help loved ones find peace, and that mourning can be transformed into celebration. Julian’s discovery inspires his family to cherish memories of Juni even as they try to move forward, and Julian himself is left with a new understanding of grief—that it is something to be embraced rather than hidden. His act of inviting his family to celebrate Christmas after their loss helps them heal and start to remember Juli in a joyful way, embodying the idea that love persists beyond death and that remembering loved ones keeps their spirit alive in our hearts.
