Ending explained
How The Sixth (2024) ends, in short: the final scene, the last twist and what it means for the characters. The full ending explained, with every spoiler, lives on its own page.
Throughout The Sixth Sense, the revelation that Malcolm is actually dead changes everything we've understood about the story. Up until that point, we believed he was alive and helping Cole confront his fears of seeing ghosts. However, in a heartbreaking twist, Malcolm's wedding ring drops from his hand and his finger is bare, revealing he has been a ghost all along. This realization means that Malcolm died during the confrontation with Vincent Grey, when the gunshot wound left him dead but invisible to others. Instead of moving on to the afterlife, Malcolm stayed behind because he was meant to help Cole. This explains why both characters form such a strong bond—they are both lost souls helping each other find peace. Malcolm’s presence as a ghost allows him to truly understand the supernatural, which he could only grasp once he himself becomes a spirit.
The story’s emotional core is deepened by this twist. Malcolm's final moments, where he confesses his love to Anna and accepts his death, show him finally finding closure. He realizes he couldn’t change his fate but could still fulfill his purpose by guiding Cole and helping him accept his gift. This acceptance enables both characters to move forward; Cole finds comfort in his ability to communicate with spirits, and Malcolm finds peace in the knowledge that he has fulfilled his role. The ending emphasizes that death isn't the end, but a continuation where connection and understanding transcend earthly life. Ultimately, The Sixth Sense leaves viewers with a poignant message about accepting death as a natural part of life and embracing the supernatural as a source of hope and comfort.
