Okawa Hashizo, known as ‘Red Peony’ Hanji, is locked in a prison and drawn into a plot to steal the Shogun’s gold reserves. A tough fighter, he must prove his skill to avoid being killed by the inmates. The film stars noted actors Kataoka Chiezo and Tanba Tetsuro and offers many surprises. From the opening scene—prisoners delivering their own justice by killing a crooked ex‑constable—the director’s visionary touch is clear.
