The Orphans (2026) Plot Summary & Ending Explained

The conspiracy begins collapsing when Leïla is placed in a position to kill Matthias and refuses. Matthias responds by condemning Christina, then turns the violence on himself and dies by suicide. The decision does not free Leïla: Jonas takes her and tries to carry the plan forward while Gab and Driss pursue them into the building. The two men reach Leïla, but the rescue becomes a prolonged exchange in which Christina shoots and wounds them. Leïla, rather than either possible father, finally stops the confrontation from producing another body. She talks Christina down and persuades her to lower the gun, giving police the chance to secure the scene. Gab and Driss both survive their injuries. They take Leïla home together, and the story ends without showing the DNA result that was supposed to establish which one is her biological father. Nothing suggests the laboratory question ceased to have a factual answer; the film simply refuses to make that answer the condition for deciding who belongs in Leïla’s life after both men risked themselves to bring her back.

Withholding the test is more specific than saying “family is whoever loves you.” Gab and Driss carry different histories, failures, and claims on Leïla, and much of their conflict comes from believing biology will authorize one man while disqualifying the other. The final rescue makes that competition irrelevant without pretending the men are interchangeable. Both show up, both are wounded, both survive, and both participate in the return home. More importantly, Leïla is not merely the object over which they prove themselves. Her refusal to kill Matthias and her success in disarming Christina break the adults’ pattern of treating violence as the only decisive language. A revealed paternity result at that point would move authority away from her choices and back into a document. The unresolved test therefore leaves a biological fact unknown to the viewer while resolving the emotional question the men had confused with it: neither needs exclusive genetic ownership to remain responsible for her.
