Two partridge families, the Brovkins and the Podkovkins, each hatch twelve chicks. The Podkovkins befriend a lark, while a falcon kills the Brovkin family. The Podkovkin matriarch, the Orange Neck, adopts the orphaned chicks. In autumn she brings twenty‑four of them to a partridge gathering, where she is chosen as the lead chicken.
