Don Diego de la Vega Clint Douglas resigns his commission as a cadet and sails from Spain to California after a letter from his father begs him to return immediately. Arriving in the Pueblo of Los Angeles, he learns that his father has been replaced as Alcalde by Don Luis Quintero, a puppet under the control of the witty and urbane Captain Esteban. The once-free populace are now oppressed by high taxes and cruel laws, with beatings and imprisonment common for minor infractions.

To avoid drawing attention, Diego adopts the persona of a fop, presenting himself as ineffectual and harmless. The disguise earns him the nickname peacock from those who underestimate him. His father understands him as weak, but Diego is willing to endure that perception to pursue a larger goal: restoring freedom to the people.

Secretly, Diego takes one of his ancestral swords and steps into the role of the legendary masked hero, El Zorro.

From the shadows, this new vigilante launches a campaign of fear against the Alcalde and Esteban, rallying the townsfolk to resist and reclaim their dignity. In his double life as a flirtatious gentleman, he courts Teresa, the Alcalde’s niece, while also flirting with the Alcalde’s wife, Inez, to gain information and provoke jealousy in Esteban.

The situation grows more tense when Frey Felipe, Diego’s old teacher, is accused of being Zorro and arrested; Diego mounts a daring rescue. Meanwhile, his father leads the peons and caballeros, marching on the Alcalde’s palace and building momentum for a full uprising.

Inside the palace, Zorro confronts the Alcalde and forces him to sign a letter of resignation. Esteban, startled after Diego removes the Zorro mask, quietly says:

So… inside a peacock, we find a hawk

That moment of admitted vulnerability gives Diego the upper hand, and he finishes Esteban off for good.

Hearing the rebels storm the palace, Alejandro reveals the Alcalde’s resignation to the crowd and orders Don Luis and his wife sent back to Spain in dishonor. The crowd roars its approval as the rebellion gains real momentum. Diego proclaims that the sword of Diego has never enjoyed such distinction, and Zorro replies with a final, intimate nod:

Thank you… Father

Realizing that his son is the famous masked hero, Alejandro smiles as the two raise their swords together, a bold symbol of victory and the restoration of freedom for the pueblo.
