After Emperor Peter III is murdered and succeeded by Catherine, Satan senses an imbalance. He dispatches his envoy, the teacher Farfa—who resembles Peter—to seize the Montenegrin duke’s power and reclaim the Russian throne. Montenegrins crown Farfa as Emperor Scepan Mali; he repels a Turkish invasion, falls for Elfa, and defies Satan, who hunts him.
