What Happens at the End of The Lullaby?

How The Lullaby (2018) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.

In the end, Rachel manages to retrieve a child from Lilith’s realm, but it turns out to be Zachary, Vivian’s son, rather than her own Elias. Vivian had switched the babies to save Elias, sacrificing herself in the process to keep her child safe from Lilith. With Vivian dead, Rachel and her husband, John, realize that the evil isn’t completely vanquished. They still need to go back and perform the final ritual by singing the lullaby again to retrieve Elias from Lilith’s underworld. The couple then discreetly takes the book and prepares for a more perilous journey, hinting at a potential sequel where they might face the darkness once more.

The mid-credits scene adds a chilling twist: Vivian, now possessed by Lilith, is shown singing to a baby in Lilith’s realm, suggesting she might be waiting to take more children, or perhaps is still connected to Lilith’s malicious intent. It leaves viewers pondering whether Vivian will eventually get Elias or continue to serve Lilith’s sinister plans. Overall, the ending emphasizes that the cycle of motherhood and sacrifice is never truly over, leaving the door open for future confrontations with the darkness that resides between worlds.
