The attempted “modernisation” of Melbourne in the 1950s demolished much of the city’s cultural fabric, erasing elegant cinemas and picture palaces that once defined its streetscape. This Melbourne‑made documentary revives those lost venues, weaving archival footage, historic photographs and interviews with former patrons and experts to showcase their architectural charm, social importance and the nostalgia they evoked, effectively bringing the vanished world of mid‑century moviegoing back to life.
