In 1986, astronomer‑turned‑computer scientist Clifford Stoll began work at Lawrence Berkeley Lab and spotted a 75‑cent mismatch between two accounting programs. Suspecting a breach, he traced the intrusion through the Ethernet and ultimately identified the KGB‑backed hacker Markus Hess in Hannover, Germany.
