On May 30, 1889 the South Fork Dam, built to create a leisure lake for wealthy Pittsburgh industrialists, failed after heavy rains and poor maintenance. The resulting torrent, 40 feet high and half a mile wide, raced 14 miles downstream, devastating Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and killing over 2,000 people. The documentary recounts the tragedy and argues that it was entirely preventable.
