How The Internship (2026) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.
In the film’s climax the teenage “interns” finally confront the shadowy forces that have been hunting them. After a chaotic chase that leads them to an abandoned telephone‑exchange building, they discover that the facility has been repurposed as a secret training ground for child operatives. The man who runs it is a rogue CIA officer who has been keeping the original internship program alive in secret, far beyond any official sanction.
Just as the interns begin a desperate gunfight against this officer and the heavily armed guards he has summoned, two unexpected allies appear: the young operative known as Catalyst’s mother and the former CIA operative she had enlisted for help. Together they sweep through the room, eliminating the remaining guards and leaving only the interns, the rogue officer and the CIA director who arrives at the end.
The director, a senior figure in the agency, declares his intention to revive the internship scheme—not as a covert “black‑ops” project, but as a program that would be run by the very youths the agency has trained. In a final, shocking twist he reveals that both Catalyst and her mother have been double agents for Russia, acting as the mole that has fed the Russian side inside the CIA all along.
Thus the ending pulls together the film’s tangled web of betrayals: the interns, raised as assassins, are caught between two rival intelligence services; the clandestine CIA officer’s personal training school is exposed; and the agency’s leadership, rather than shutting the program down, opts to institutionalise it, even as its most dangerous members have been working for the enemy the whole time. This revelation reframes every earlier chase as a carefully orchestrated move by the Russian mole, leaving the audience with the unsettling notion that the very system designed to control these children is now being handed over to them, while the true puppeteers have already slipped away.
