What Happens at the End of The Human Trial?

How The Human Trial (2022) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.

In the ending of The Human Trial, it is revealed that Teah, the young daughter of David and Dione Sinclair, was driven to a tragic act by her deeply traumatic upbringing and extremist beliefs. After discovering her father’s secret affair and the upcoming new child, Teah’s obsession with overpopulation and environmental destruction pushed her to attack Aurora Miller, who was pregnant with her father’s second child. Though she attempted to stop the birth of another baby, her emotional instability and radical beliefs, shaped by her parents’ neglect and her own exposure to horrific incidents, ultimately led her to commit a violent crime. The court concludes that her actions were a result of her troubled upbringing and the emotional neglect she endured from her parents, who themselves were found guilty of neglecting her psychological and emotional needs.

It is disclosed that David had been working as an informant for the police, spying on his own daughter to protect her from arrest, which raises questions about his motives—whether he genuinely wanted to help her or was just looking out for himself. Despite knowing his role, Teah’s anger and betrayal at her father's double life pushed her to the brink. Her attack on Aurora was fueled by her feelings of betrayal and her extremist obsession with halting human reproduction to save the Earth. However, she was ultimately sentenced to serve her time in a punitive coma, sparing her from witnessing the potential destruction she feared.

David and Dione’s failures as parents, from their neglect to their role in shaping Teah’s radical beliefs, sealed their fate as they were both convicted of emotional and psychological neglect under the Milligan Act. While they are not necessarily sentenced to life, their punishment will be harsh, reflecting the severity of the consequences caused by their neglect. The ending leaves some hope through Inquisitor Willis, who, despite witnessing the worst of humanity, remains optimistic about the future, especially as she is shown to be pregnant herself. Her hope suggests a belief in the possibility of better parenting and a more hopeful future, despite the darkness that has unfolded. Ultimately, the film closes on a note that acknowledges the tragic consequences of neglect and extremist ideologies but also hints at the potential for renewal and hope in generations to come.
