Meanwhile, Kitty and Anne are dragged to the manor and abused by Jordan’s men, but Beldam—who had earlier escaped the pillory—returns with a horse and rope, allowing the two women to flee. The younger villagers, fearing retribution, decide to abandon the hamlet; even little Lizzie is taken away with Kent and Jordan as they head for town.

In the final moments the estate is empty. Jordan, satisfied that the village is cleared, orders hired hands to settle the cottages, cut down the forest and build stalls. Kent, reduced to a puppet, hands Walter the keys and promises that the women will eventually be freed. Walter, now alone, releases the remaining outsider, lets him take whatever remains, and then sets the abandoned cottages ablaze, refusing to give the new settlers a home. He follows the old custom of bumping one’s head against the boundary stone, and the film ends with Walter slamming his head against the stone, a stark gesture that finally ties him to the land—he belongs to the village, even if it costs him his life.
