Eight‑year‑old Eva shares a close bond with her mother, who often reacts immaturely. When her mother forgets to pick her up from school, Eva runs away in panic and is hit by a car driven by Etienne, a kind second‑hand bookseller and mountain climber with keen memory. She lies in a coma, and doctors cannot say if she will ever awaken, speak or move.
