The ending of The Gates delivers a classic horror twist that recontextualizes everything the audience has witnessed. After a harrowing night inside Bishopsgate Prison, paranormal investigator Lucian Abberton and the uncle-niece duo of Frederick and Emma Ladbroje appear to have triumphed over the vengeful spirit of William Colcott. By reversing the polarity of the Atmosizer—a device originally designed to thin the veil between the living and the dead—they successfully drain the spiritual energy from the room. Lucian then binds William's malevolent essence to the key of his old prison cell, seemingly trapping the spirit forever. The key is entombed within the walls of Cell Number 13, and the survivors walk away, believing the nightmare is over.

However, the film's final moments reveal a far more sinister truth. While Emma and Frederick are celebrated as the "great ghost hunters of London," and the prison governor dismisses the night's carnage as a mere prisoner riot, Lucian is not the man he was when he entered Bishopsgate. In a quiet, chilling reveal, he removes his gloves to expose a grotesque, monstrous claw where his left hand used to be. The severe burn he suffered earlier during an attempt to handle William's wedding ring was not just an injury—it was a mark of possession. Lucian did not bind William's spirit to the key; instead, William has possessed Lucian. Now wearing the serial killer's wedding ring, Lucian abandons his life in London, driven by a singular, dark purpose: to continue William's work and resurrect his wife.

The ending transforms what seemed like a victory into a failure, suggesting that evil cannot be so easily contained by science or spiritual will. The very device meant to save them—the Atmosizer—may have inadvertently facilitated the transfer of William's soul into a living vessel. As Lucian walks away, the audience is left with the unsettling realization that William Colcott is not gone; he has simply found a new way to walk the earth, continuing his dark quest from beyond the grave.
