The Gardener (2025) Plot Summary & Ending Explained

At the end of The Gardener, Elmer chooses to leave his life as an assassin behind, but this decision doesn't come easily or cleanly. After helping Violeta dispose of a body, he confronts his mother, China, revealing that he no longer wants to participate in her murderous schemes. This leads to a violent clash where China hits him and takes him to the hospital for brain surgery to remove a tumor that had been affecting his emotions. Post-surgery, Elmer temporarily regains his emotional capacity but, feeling betrayed and wounded by his mother's manipulation, he decides to abandon the life of violence altogether and focus instead on his passion for gardening.

However, the story ends on a tense note, suggesting this new beginning may not hold. While China and Elmer have managed to evade arrest so far, their crimes remain unsolved, especially after a police officer unknowingly destroys evidence by digging up their buried victims—Chinese had already exhumed the bodies. Violeta, who was once a victim but also a killer herself, eventually leaves Elmer after discovering the depth of his murderous past. She moves away, indicating that their relationship, though meaningful, cannot survive their dark secrets.
