Hubert Gerold, the new forester of the Silver Forest, battles a scheme to clear the woods. With the court councilor’s help he convinces the council to sell building plots instead of timber. At a hunters’ ball he meets Liesl, the councilor’s granddaughter, but her suitor Max returns from Vienna, determined to thwart their romance.
