At the end of Fences, the story makes a significant emotional jump, revealing that Troy has died of a heart attack years earlier. The family gathers at the Maxon house to mourn him, and we see Cory, who has joined the marines, refusing to attend his father's funeral due to lingering bitterness. During this gathering, Raynell, Troy's illegitimate daughter with Alberta, sings "A Dog Named Blue," symbolizing the complicated relationship between Troy and Rose, with the song's story reflecting Troy’s view of Rose as loyal and obedient—like the dog seeking approval. The family also listens to Uncle Gabriel play his trumpet, believed to open the gates of heaven, providing a spiritual closure to Troy’s life.

The recurring fence in the story symbolizes more than just a boundary around their yard; it represents the emotional and psychological limits within the family. For Cory, it signifies entrapment, growing from Troy's efforts to prevent him from escaping his small-town life. For Rose and Troy, the fence embodies their desire to keep the family together—Rose wanting security and Troy wanting to hold onto his own fears and failures by keeping others confined. Troy’s refusal to finish the fence himself, insisting instead that Cory build it, underscores his conflicted nature: both a dreamer and a harsh enforcer of practicality.

Throughout the film, Troy’s beliefs and contradictions shape his family’s fate. His strictness and obsession with duty stem from a deep fear of failure, but his own dreams are halted by his shortcomings, leading him to suppress his son's ambitions and cheat on Rose. His desire to be the provider and protector ultimately creates barriers within his family, entangling love and control.

The ending reveals that while outside forces influence the Maxons’ lives, the core message is that they are ultimately responsible for their choices. Troy’s flaws and virtues, his dreams and regrets, come to fruition in the way his life ends and how his family continues. Despite his mistakes, the story emphasizes that whether we are shaped by environment or personal choice, we must live with the consequences of the paths we take. The final scenes leave viewers with a poignant reflection on the complexity of family, responsibility, and the enduring struggle to balance dreams with reality.
