Claudine Price, Diahann Carroll, is a single Harlem mother living on welfare with six children, navigating a fragile,

fragile balance between love, need, and the rules that govern her benefits. She finds companionship and hope in Rupert “Roop” Marshall, James Earl Jones, a garbage collector who enters her life with warmth and a steady hand. Their growing bond is tested by poverty, the constant pressure of the welfare system, and the wary, sometimes hostile reception from Claudine’s children, especially her oldest son, Charles, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, who fears Roop will abandon their mother just as previous husbands have done.

Early on, Roop is welcomed into Claudine’s cramped, shabby apartment, but the atmosphere is strained. The children strike him as rude and vulgar, a reminder of the precarious situation they’re all trying to survive. Into this tight domestic world comes Miss Kabak, the social worker who checks in on Claudine’s status—asking whether she is employed and whether she is dating. To maximize the benefits, Claudine habitually presents herself as unemployed and single. If she were to reveal a job, a relationship, or receive gifts from a partner, those benefits would be reduced or cut. The tension between honesty and survival is a daily burden because Claudine does work as a housekeeper, yet her wages are insufficient to support the family without welfare.

Complicating the financial strain is Claudine’s teenage daughter’s pregnancy, a difficult challenge that adds emotional weight and practical stress to already tight finances. Still, Roop’s presence endears him to the children over time, and a softening acceptance grows, even as the practicalities of their shared life press in on them.

As their relationship deepens, Roop begins to plan a future with Claudine, and the family starts to look toward a wedding. But before the couple can announce their engagement to the children, Roop’s own troubles come to the surface. Papers arrive declaring an underpayment of child support for Roop’s other children, and his wages are garnished to cover the debt. The blow drives him from Claudine’s side for a few days: he vanishes, misses work, and skips the Father’s Day celebration the children had organized. When Charles locates Roop, he finds him in a bar, intoxicated, and the confrontation that follows underscores the fragile line they all walk between anger and reconciliation. Roop returns, they talk, and they begin to repair the rift.

Eventually, the couple decides to marry, choosing to face their future together in the face of economic pressures and social scrutiny. Yet life intrudes once more: in the middle of the ceremony, Charles bursts into the apartment with police in pursuit after his involvement in a political demonstration. The wedding is interrupted, and the family—along with Roop—hastily flees the scene, climbing into a police wagon. The film closes on a hopeful note, with the entire blended family, hand in hand, walking through their Harlem neighborhood, united and looking toward a calmer, more secure life together.
