The night in the seaside hide‑away collapses into a nightmare when the three shipwreck survivors—Noe, Pixie and Opal—reveal themselves as more than lost tourists. Their seductive games and the eerie, wordless song that drifts across the tide act like a forgotten siren’s call. One by one the men are drawn toward the water: Matt disappears in the dark, Eric follows him into the black surf and is swallowed by an unseen presence, and Paul, desperate, ties himself to a pole in a futile homage to Odysseus, only to feel the rope loosen and his will dissolve. By dawn only the silent, blood‑stained house remains, and the camera lingers on JW Waterhouse’s “Hylas and the Nymphs,” a painting that now seems to have leapt from canvas to reality.

The three women are essentially ancient water spirits—naiads or sirens—who guard their domain and punish those who intrude. Their presence mirrors the myth of Hylas, who was lured to his death by freshwater nymphs while accompanying heroic figures. In the film, Eric, Matt and Paul stand in for Hylas, Heracles and Jason: modern thieves whose greed for the stolen masterpiece awakens the old gods. The painting they stole is the key; it is the visual echo of the original myth, and by bringing it ashore they summon the very forces that once doomed Hylas.

Denice, the fourth conspirator, is left wandering the shore wounded and bewildered. Her final appearance, stumbling back toward the cottage while the painting of the three nymphs dominates the frame, suggests that the myth has reclaimed its balance. The men’s selfish desires and betrayals are repaid with the timeless, merciless justice of the deep, and the stolen artwork becomes both the catalyst and the seal of their doom. The film ends with the sense that the ancient curse has been re‑awakened, drowning the modern thieves and restoring the water spirits to their eternal vigil.
