O Descobrimento do Brasil is an ambitious historical epic that dramatizes Pedro Álvares Cabral’s 1500 voyage to the New World. As one of Brazil’s earliest productions, it follows the armada from Portugal to the Brazilian coast, depicting encounters between Portuguese explorers and indigenous peoples and using inventive lighting aboard the ships. The film’s standout feature is the original cantata composed by Heitor Villa‑Lobos, which underscores the entire narrative.
