What Happens in The Christmas Setup: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of The Christmas Setup (2020) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

During Christmas in Milwaukee, Hugo Spencer [Ben Lewis], a lawyer, returns home with his best friend Madelyn McKay [Ellen Wong]. His mother, Kate Spencer [Fran Drescher], immediately fills the house with a long list of chores and festive activities for her two sons, Hugo and Aiden Spencer [Chad Connell], who arrives later that week. While there, Hugo runs into Patrick Ryan [Blake Lee], a boy he crushed on in high school, and Kate playfully tries to set them up, much to Hugo's embarrassment.

Hugo discovers the neighborhood's landmark train station will soon be demolished and rushes to save it. The connection between Hugo and Patrick deepens, and they share their first kiss under the northern lights.

Hugo receives a call from his boss about a senior partner promotion, conditioned on relocating to London to open a new office. He is torn between staying in Milwaukee—close to family and Patrick—and pursuing the opportunity. During a family Christmas trivia night, Madelyn accidentally reveals the job news, forcing Hugo to reconsider.

Aiden and Madelyn begin a romantic relationship, while Hugo uses the time to secure the paperwork needed to save the train station. At the train station's festive party, Hugo decides to decline the London move and instead begins a long-distance relationship with Patrick.

The film ends with Kate filming Hugo and Patrick as they kiss outside the train station.
