Satyajit Ray’s first Hindi feature is set in 1856 when Nawab Wajid Ali Shah rules Awadh, one of India’s last kingdoms. The British, via General Outram, plot annexation amid court intrigue. The Nawab seeks pleasure and rites while nobles Mir and Mirza ignore duties, absorbed in endless chess. It adapts Munshi Premchand’s short story of the same name.
