Madame de Montespan, Louis XIV’s chief mistress, is disgraced when the king favors the young Marie‑Angélique Scorailles. To regain influence, the scorned Montespan seeks La Voisin, a famed fortune‑teller, physician, midwife and alleged dealer in black masses and poisons. Soon after, the newly titled Duchess of Fontanges, Marie‑Angélique, dies mysteriously at only twenty.
