Norman Puckle, a well‑meaning but accident‑prone grocer’s assistant, is spurned by his lover Marlene and rescued from a suicide plunge by a Royal Navy petty officer. Persuaded to enlist, he discovers naval life is far from glamorous, failing every drill. Yet an admiral labels him a typical British sailor and selects him as the first test subject for an experimental rocket destined for outer space.
