Ending explained
How The Animal Kingdom (2024) ends, in short: the final scene, the last twist and what it means for the characters. The full ending explained, with every spoiler, lives on its own page.
The ending of Animal is a culmination of complex emotions, revenge, and family loyalty, all woven into Ranvijay’s brutal journey of catharsis. After years of neglect from his father, Balbir Singh, who was obsessed with building his business at the expense of his family, Ranvijay becomes a fierce, almost animalistic figure. The film shows his deep desire for love and validation from his father, which he painfully never receives—a craving that fuels his violent and tumultuous life. This longing leads to repeated conflict, especially when Ranvijay returns after eight years abroad, only to find his father still dismissive and his family torn apart. His protective instincts and need for respect push him to confront and kill Varun, his brother-in-law, when he realizes Varun is conspiring to take over his father’s empire and harm their family.
The story takes a dark turn when Ranvijay learns that his own enemies, the Haque brothers, who are motivated by revenge for past family grievances, organized the attack on their father. Abrar Haque, in particular, wants to avenge the death of his grandfather, which was fueled by the family feud stemming from Balbir Singh’s refusal to share wealth. This vendetta culminates in Ranvijay confronting Abrar and his brother, leading to a deadly showdown. Ranvijay, in a bid to end the cycle of violence, kills Abrar in a dramatic face-off after pleading for peace—an act he regards as sealing his blood feud and finally gaining the catharsis he has long sought.
When Ranvijay returns home soaked in Abrar’s blood, there is an emotional reconciliation with his father, Balbir Singh, who finally acknowledges his son's sacrifices and asks for forgiveness before he dies of a terminal illness. This moment signifies that Ranvijay has finally found some peace, having shed the rage and violence that haunted him for years. The film hints at a possible future with the introduction of Abrar’s younger brother, who has undergone plastic surgery to look identical to Ranvijay, foreshadowing more violence and chaos. With Zoya pregnant, the story leaves open the possibility that the cycle of revenge might continue, raising questions about whether Ranvijay’s brutal quest for validation and closure will ever truly end. In the end, Animal is a raw, unflinching portrayal of the destructive power of suppressed emotions and the grim toll of a life lived on the edge of humanity.
