Edda Chiemnyjewski, a freelance press photographer and single mother in 1970s West Berlin, discovers that “a cook has no time for affairs of state” and struggles to find a market for her women’s photography collective’s city‑documentary project. As the city itself becomes a character, the film uses self‑irony—delivered by Helke Sander, who also stars—to portray the precarious life of freelancers and the divided existence in a divided Berlin.
