What Happens at the End of The Advent Calendar?

How The Advent Calendar (2021) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.

Eva's journey with the cursed advent calendar ends in a tragic mix of manipulation, sacrifice, and illusion. When she finally opens the last door on December 24th, she finds a magical candy that promises to reverse all the horrors inflicted by the calendar, including the deaths she caused. However, before she can eat it, Antoine warns her that the rules only require her to obey until she opens the final door, implying she can choose to reject the magic and avoid the consequences. Yet, in the hallucination created by the creature, Eva succumbs to her impulses, killing her best friend, her dog, and her father, believing these sacrifices might grant her a life free of curse. Just as she's about to decide her fate, the scene cuts to black.

A year later, a man holding Eva’s phone and her baby comes knocking on her door—indicating that she likely gave in to the temptation of the last candy and paid a terrible price. Her apparent fate suggests she lost her ability to walk once more, trapped in a cycle of manipulation and illusion. But this ending reveals that her final act of selfishness was just an illusion: the curse isn’t truly broken, and Eva's true fate remains uncertain. What is clear is that she was caught in the web of dark magic, and her choice to continue the cycle or break free ultimately hinges on her decision to resist temptation. The film leaves her future ambiguous, emphasizing that the horrors and illusions of the calendar are never truly over.
